Harmonising the Mind: The Power of Music and Mental Health Awareness at EY UKI Business Development
"I'll bet you never thought that you would be dancing and talking about your mental health, all before 10:30 today!" This was my parting remark to colleagues at EY UKI Business Development yesterday after my Harmonising the Mind performance—and it perfectly captured the energy and enthusiasm in the room.
The event was designed to blend music with meaningful conversations about mental health, offering a fresh and engaging way to address a topic that affects us all. The vibe in the room was incredible—colleagues were not just participating; they were truly connecting, both with the music and with each other.
Why Music and Mental Health?
Music has an incredible ability to bypass barriers and foster openness, making it an ideal medium for exploring mental health. Its rhythms and melodies can influence our mood, help us process emotions, and even build resilience. During the performance, I shared personal insights and stories about how music can help us better understand and manage our mental well-being.
The morning began with high-energy tracks that got everyone moving—quite literally. There’s something transformative about a room full of people letting loose and dancing together. It breaks down walls, sets a positive tone, and creates an environment where it feels safe to talk about topics that might otherwise feel heavy or uncomfortable.
Breaking the Stigma
After the music, we transitioned into a conversation about mental health. Drawing parallels between music and emotional well-being, we explored how both can help us navigate challenges and find balance in our busy lives. The session encouraged reflection and dialogue, and it was inspiring to see colleagues openly share their thoughts and experiences. Moments like these remind us of the importance of creating spaces where mental health conversations can thrive without judgment.
Feedback and Takeaways
Following the session, I stayed on for the morning to chat with attendees, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Many shared how energised and inspired they felt, with several remarking that they had never experienced a mental health session presented in such a dynamic and accessible way. Some said it opened their eyes to the small but impactful ways they can incorporate music into their routines to improve their mental health. Others appreciated the opportunity to connect with colleagues on a deeper level.
Building a Culture of Openness
Mental health awareness is more than just a trend; it’s a vital aspect of workplace culture. By blending creativity and conversation, events like Harmonising the Mind can spark meaningful change. At EY, the commitment to fostering an environment where mental health is prioritised and stigma is challenged was clear in the engagement and energy of everyone in the room.
Looking Ahead
The positive response from this session has left me feeling hopeful and motivated to continue bringing music and mental health together in innovative ways. It’s a reminder that addressing mental health doesn’t always have to be serious or sombre. Sometimes, it can look like a room full of colleagues dancing, laughing, and sharing—all before 10:30 in the morning.
Thank you to the EY UKI Business Development team for your openness, enthusiasm, and willingness to try something a little different. Let’s keep the conversation going, and let’s keep dancing!
“HOuse HOuse HOuse! A great session Rob, it gave us energy that continued through the day and I know that the ‘it starts with a walk’ part of the session really stuck with people. Utterly brilliant”
